This week’s Roscommon Sport Weekend Round-up features Gaelic Football, Hurling, Camogie, Soccer, Cycling, Rugby and Swimming.
Gaelic Football
Round Two of the Roscommon GAA Senior, Intermediate and Junior A Football Championships took place over the past three days. You can check out the results here and we will publish a full round-up later.
Camogie
A Shauna Fallon goal helped Roscommon to defeat Kerry by 1-12 to 0-10 in Round 1 of the Liberty Insurance All-Ireland Premier Junior Championship in Tralee. Kelley Hopkins and Annette McGeeney were in top form again, scoring 0-5 and 0-4 respectively. Niamh Watson scored 0-02 and Niamh Coyle scored 0-1. Read the full match report here.
Roscommon was represented by Padraig Pearses and Four Roads at the John West All-Ireland Feile na nGael however neither team reached a Final.
Hurling
Four Roads Under 14s won the John West All-Ireland Feile na nGael Division 5 Shield Final. They defeated Kildare Club Sallins by 3-2 to 0-0 in the Final.
Athleague-Tremane suffered a 1-5 to 1-6 defeat in the Division 6 Shield Quarter-Final.
Carrick Hurling Club, who feature many players from North Roscommon, lost in the Division 8 Cup Quarter-Final.
Soccer
The penultimate round of games took place in the Roscommon and District League Umbro Masters Competition on Friday night and results mean that there is a Semi-Final spot up for grabs next Saturday. Results, Fixtures and the Table can be found here.
In the Mid Western Girls Soccer League there was Club action at Under 10, 12 and 14 Level. Check out the round-up here
The annual Umbro Kennedy Cup Tournament took place at the University of Limerick and there was mixed fortunes for the Roscommon team. They were defeated 4-0 by both the NDSL and Waterford teams but had a 3-2 win over Drogheda. That result put them into the Shield Quarter-Final, where they lost 3-0 to Mayo.
The defeated teams later played-off for placings. Roscommon defeated Wicklow 2-1 and then drew 1-1 with Sligo/Leitrim. The game went straight to penalties with Roscommon winning 5-4. The result saw them finish 21st overall out of 32 teams.
Cycling
Daire Feeley continued his recent run of good form and won the Claremorris Criterium on Friday evening.
Rugby
Roscommon’s Shane Layden was part of the Irish Rugby 7s side which was defeated by Spain in the Quarter-Final of the Olympic Qualification tournament in Monaco today. The team won their three group games on Saturday but conceded a late try today which finished their Olympic hopes. Spain went on to win the title and take the last remaining Olympic spot.
Swimming
The first leg of the Open Water Swim Series, the Lough Key Castle Loop, took place in Lough Key on Saturday morning. Almost 200 swimmers took on one of the two routes on offer – a 750m loop around bouys or a 1,500m loop which entailed swimming around Castle Island.
The second leg of the series, “The Hodson Mile” takes place at the Hodson Bay on July 9th.
