Athlone Town return to league action tomorrow, Sunday 29th May, when they play host to UCD in Series 12 of this seasons Airtricity League Division 1. Kick off is at 3pm.
Last weekend Athlone Town played out an uneventful scoreless draw against Letterkenny Rovers in the 2nd Round of the FAI Cup and then followed that up on Tuesday with a 1-0 win in the replay thanks to an Alan O’Sullivan goal late in the 2nd period of extra time.
UCD also tasted victory in the cup with an excellent home win over Bray Wanderers in the UCD Bowl by a score of 4-3 before a mid-week Leinster Senior Cup semi-final loss to Bohemian FC by a solitary goal.
The clubs have met in the league on 21 occasions excluding play offs since 1995 with UCD winning 11, Athlone winning 5 and the other 5 ending in draws. In these games a total of 61 goals were scored with UCD on 38 and Athlone on 23.
Games over the period have averaged almost 3 goals per game. There has never been a scoreless draw between the sides.
Earlier in the season at The Bowl the teams played out a 1-1 draw with the Athlone goal coming from David Cassidy cancelling out Gary O’Neill’s opener.
Despite that draw this game has the makings of a goal fest with the 22 league games played so far this season involving the sides total 75 goals with UCD’s games averaging just over 3 a game while Athlones are just below the 3 goals per game mark.
Alan Mathews has no suspensions to report and looks like he will yet again have a clean bill of health on the injury front heading into the game.
Kick off, at the Athlone Town Stadium, is scheduled for 3pm.
