Independent County Councillor Tony Ward will be elected as the Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council at this afternoon’s Annual Meeting.
The Curraghboy based Councillor will succeed Fianna Fáil Councillor Paddy Kilduff. The new Leas-Cathaoirleach will be Ballintubber based Independent Councillor Nigel Dineen, who will succeed Fianna Fáil Councillor Paschal Fitzmaurice of Castlerea.
It will be a busy afternoon for County Councillors. At 2:15pm a Special Meeting will be held to co-opt Liam Callaghan to fill the seat vacated by Senator Maura Hopkins and to make nominations to Committees.
That meeting will be followed by the Annual Meeting of Roscommon County Council. The activities of the afternoon will conclude with the June Meeting of Roscommon County Council.
Today’s elections are the latest in a series of recent changes at local government level.
Last month Fianna Fáil Councillor Orla Leyden was elected as Cathaoirleach of the Roscommon Municipal District. She succeeded Independent County Councillor Kathleen Shanagher. The Leas-Cathaoirleach of the District is Councillor Paschal Fitzmaurice.
Fianna Fáil Councillor Ivan Connaughton is the Cathaoirleach of the Athlone Municipal District with Fianna Fáil Councillor John Keogh serving as Leas-Cathaoirleach.
Fianna Fáil Councillor John Cummins is the Cathaoirleach of the Boyle Municipal District with Fianna Fáil Councillor Joe Murphy serving as Leas-Cathaoirleach.
