Michael Fitzmaurice TD is to seek an urgent meeting with the Minister for Health Simon Harris following reports that almost€8 Million for the proposed Specialist Rehabilitation Unit at Roscommon Hospital has been withdrawn.
The Independent TD for Roscommon-Galway said “A local consultant is claiming this week that the funding for the unit has been pulled. The need for this facility at Roscommon has been pointed out many times in the past and the commitment was made by the previous administration. The decision to fund this unit is a political decision and I will strongly resist any attempt to withdraw this funding.”
“The unit would be a huge addition to Roscommon Hospital in terms of employment and would also be a major boost to the families of patients from the west of the country who would not have to travel to Dun Laoghaire to visit their loved ones. I will be contacting Minister Harris at the earliest opportunity to make a statement on this matter and I have today lodged a Parliamentary Question to him on this matter and await his reply” he concluded.
It is just over 12 months ago since the funding of €7.85 million was announced for the 20 bed Specialist Rehabilitation Unit which is due to be constructed to the rear of the main hospital building.
