Athlone Town take to the field this evening (Saturday 21st May) when they play host to intermediate side Letterkenny Rovers in the 2nd Round of the 2016 Daily Mail FAI Cup.
Last weekend Athlone Town lost out 3-0 to high flying Limerick in the Markets Field a game where they held the unbeaten Mid-West side scoreless for almost 60 minutes before their defence was breached.
Letterkenny Rovers lost out last weekend as well in the final of the FAI intermediate Cup to Crumlin United by a score of 5-0. This was their first appearance in the final and it will be one to forget as it was a game where if Alan Mathews was watching he would have learnt very little as Crumlin created chance after chance from start to finish.
Despite that result this is a cup game and there will be no favourites as Athlone found out when in 2013 they lost out at home to Bluebell Utd 3-2 in a replay after the first game finished 2-2.
Athlone have had a poor run in this competition over the last number of years with their win over Liffey Wanderers last season their only win since they defeated Kildare County 2-1 in Station Road back in 2009.
Alan Mathews has no suspensions to report and looks like he will have a clean bill of health on the injury front heading into this game.
Kick off the Athlone Town Stadium is scheduled for 7.45pm.
