Michael Fitzmaurice TD has said today’s news that over 130,000 children are in primary school classes of over 30 “is simply not acceptable” and added that the incoming Government will “have to prioritise Health and Education”.
He went on to say that “It is impossible to expect any teacher to be able to cope with over 30 children and ensure that every child get the same benefit from the school day. We have seen a big increase in the numbers of children going to school at national level in the past few years and as resources become available the Government will have to proceed with it’s recruitment of additional teachers at primary level to reduce the high numbers of classes where there are over 30 children in attendance.”
It must be a priority of any new Government.” he concluded.
