The Roscommon Ladies Footballers, under the stewardship of ex county star Michael Finneran, began their season with a very attractive friendly against Clare this afternoon at Clann na nGael’s Grounds in Johnstown.
By Ollie Colgan
The game was played in three 20 minute periods. The first period began with a terrific pace, Roscommon getting the first point through Beirne but Clare answered quickly and indeed raced into a six points to one lead before Roscommon battled back to leave the score at the end of the first period Clare 0-7 Roscommon 0-4.
The second period was almost the exact opposite with Clare getting the first point but this time it was the home team who went on a mini scoring spree with a goal and two points to edge ahead. But Clare fought to leave the sides level after the end of two periods Roscommon 1-8 Clare 0-11.
At this stage both sides made a number of changes and it was the superior fitness Clare, who had travelled with a big squad, that proved to be the difference. They began to turn the screw and forged ahead with three unanswered goals. To Roscommon’s eternal credit they never gave up and continued to tick away at the scoreboard but Clare had the last laugh with a fourth goal near which killed off the Roscommon challenge. Final score Clare 4-13, Roscommon 1-10.

After that they begin their quest for National League honours on January 29th with an away fixture against Offaly then they face Tipperary at home on February the 5th. Then it’s away to Meath on the 19th February, home to Down on the 25th February, next up is two away fixtures to Leitrim on the 18th March and Limerick on the 26th March, before finally wrapping up the group by facing Wexford at home on the 2nd April.
