Deadly discovery
An elderly farmer handed over over 4kg container of the deadly poison Cyanide at the EPA Hazardous Farm Waste event in Roscommon town last Saturday.
Speaking to Shannonside FM Suzanne Dempsey Environmental Education Officer with Roscommon County Council explained that the quantity was enough to “wipe out most the county”. The farmer explained that he had acquired the poison 45 years ago to kill rabbits and that it had been stored in his shed since!
Budget
Last Friday Roscommon County Council published it’s Budget for 2017. Here are some interesting figures:
40% – The Increase in the number of Planning Applications so far this year
155 – The number of unfinished Housing Estates in County Roscommon.
€33,300 – The Homeless Budget; a 200% increase on the 2016 figure.
€186,000 – Funding allocated to meet the operational cost of the Roscommon Leisure Centre.
€500,000 – Funding allocated to the development of “An Chistin” – the proposed Food Hub in Castlerea.
€52,400,000 – the Budget of Roscommon County Council for 2017.
