U14 Boys Division 1 League: St Brigids 2-08, Boyle 2-06
Our Div 1 team completed their spring leagues fixtures in Boyle on Tuesday evening with a very tight win over an excellent Boyle side. Aided by a stiff breeze, Brigids went on the attack right from the start and had two fine points on the board from James O’Rourke and Daniel Keenan before Boyle responded with a goal and a point to take the lead. Paddy Higgins added a goal for Brigids after his long range effort deceived the goalie and ended up in the net. Further points from D.Keenan and a brilliant goal from J.O’Rourke after a one two with Martin O’Grady put some daylight between the teams. Jamie Curley with a great point from distance, and two points from B.Nugent from difficult angles gave Brigids a 2-06 to 1-01 lead at half time.
Facing into the breeze for the second half, Brigids knew they would face a difficult 30 minutes of football, and that was exactly how it worked out. Boyle played some great football and gradually narrowed the gap down to 4 points with 15 minutes remaining. Despite Martin and Michael winning great possession in midfield , Brigids struggled to get scores due to some poor decision making and shooting. Thomas O’Brien finally worked the scorekeeper with an inspirational point after a surging run forward. The last 10 minutes was end to end stuff with Boyle adding 3 more points, but brilliant defending by A.O’Donovan, R.Doyle, L.Murphy, S.Daly and K.Derwin ensured that Brigids did not concede the all important goal and held out for a hard fought 2 point win. Every player on the pitch contributed to this victory, but none more so than the brilliant David Dolan, who had an outstanding game and he just edges out the tenacious Daniel Meeley who was also outstanding, for the man of the match. While this was not our best performance, the team did show great heart, determination and tenacity to hold out for the win, which ensures that we have qualified for the play offs in both Div 1 and Div 4.
