Seamus Duke, who has been the main organiser behind the annual Christmas Day GOAL Mile in Roscommon Town for the past 12 years, has decided to step aside from organising the event in order to focus on future charity work with local charities.
In a statement released this evening Seamus Duke said “Along with my wife Teresa and family, I have organised the Roscommon Town Christmas Day GOAL Mile for the past 12 years and after consulting with them and with Maura and Christy Allen, who have helped me every year since we started, and some close friends, I have decided not to go ahead this year, Christmas 2016.”
The news comes following his very successful fundraiser for for Mayo Roscommon Hospice and Roscommon Palliative Care Services earlier this month, where raised raised over €4,700.
Mr Duke announced his decision now in order to give other members of the public an adequate opportunity to consider organising the event. He added that he will “assist and advise any way I can if that happens.”
Seamus Duke concluded by thanking his family “and everyone who helped with the GOAL Mile and especially to the people of Roscommon Town and environs who have supported the event generously over the 12 years. I also want to wish GOAL the best of luck with it’s work in the Third World into the future.”
