Roscommon’s preparations for Sunday’s Connacht Final and beyond have been dented following the news that Neil Collins will require surgery to repair his hamstring after suffering a severe (Grade 3) tear.

Collins, who now plays his Club Football with St Brigid’s, Castleknock is unlikely to play any football for the remainder of the 2016 season.

The news came as part of an injury update released by the Roscommon Senior Football Team Joint Managers Kevin McStay and Fergal O’Donnell. They could now turn to last year’s Captain Niall Carty, who has missed much of this season through injury, or Under 21 Full Back Sean Mullooly, to replace Neil Collins.

Two more defenders, Brian Murtagh and Gary Patterson, have also suffered hamstring injuries and were unable to take part in the In-house Game at the weekend.

There was some positive news however.

Kevin Higgins, Cathal Mc Hugh and Cathal Shine were released back to their clubs for game time and are in consideration for a starting place.

Ian Kilbride, Ultan Harney and Diarmuid Murtagh have returned to full training and are back in consideration for a starting place. As is St Brigids’s Ronan Stack.

Ciaráin Cafferkey has been fully rehabbed from his long term injury and was released back to Western Gaels for game time.

Cian Connolly has resumed training with the panel. He sustained a Broken Jaw in the Connacht Championship opener against New York.
