Michael Fitzmaurice TD says that the proposed increase in charges for bin collection is unjustified and is calling on Minister Simon Coveney to “intervene in the situation immediately”.

The proposed nationwide increase is due to come into effect from July 1st as part of a “pay by weight” structure. In a statement released a short time ago Deputy Fitzmaurice said “I know that he (Minister Coveney) is planning to meet with the bin collection companies shortly. In that meeting he must tell the companies not to impose big increases in charges. The change in approach from July 1st was brought about to reward people who were recycling but the companies are taking advantage of the situation and it is totally unacceptable.”

Legislation

Michael Fitzmaurice went on to say “If the bin collection companies do not relent with these increases then the Minister must go back into the Dail and make arrangements to restore the situation to what it was in the past by way of more legislation. Increases of 100% plus cannot be justified and the situation is a major worry for many people who simply could not afford to pay such huge increases in charges”.
