Game versus St. Ronans in the Junior A Championship was postponed last Sunday 15th May.
Senior: On Friday, 6th May, in Tremane, St Dominics faced old rivals Na Brideoga in the Semi-final of the Galway League. Despite fielding without five players due to County camogie commitments the following day, the St Dominics team and management will know that this was a game they left behind as they suffered a single point loss on a score line of St Dominics 3-1 Na Brideoga 2-5. A failure to score for long periods of the game despite plenty of possession will give the team and management plenty to work on for the upcoming championship season. Playing against the breeze, our players were slow to settle and Na Brideoga raced into a 2-3 to no score half time lead. The second half started much brighter for St Dominics and a two goal salvo by Áine O’Meara with 15 minutes remaining gave St Dominics something to chase for the remainder of the game. A goal and a point from frees by Rachel Dolan brought the game back to the minimum with 5 minutes remaining. Despite incessant pressure and hitting the post twice, St. Dominics were unable to get the score required to win the game. Defensively, St. Dominics coped well with the Na Brideoga forwards, Caoimhe Miley, Siobhan Beirne and Eimear McNally, all playing particularly well. Offensively, Áine O’Meara and Niamh Egan can also be pleased with their performance. Overall, the league campaign can be considered successful as St. Dominics proved they are a force to be reckoned with. The team and management now have an eight week period to work on areas of team play and prepare themselves for championship.
Team: C Miley, A Coyle, S Beirne, E Gately, R Roddy, E McNally, A Dolan, R Corcoran, S Carney, A O’Meara, R Dolan, J Healy, L Kilcline, C Cox, AM Murray, Z Feeley, N Egan, M McLoughlin.
U14: Last week, our U14 girls took on Padraig Pearses in the County semi-final in Knockcroghery. This was a very competitive game throughout. Padraig Pearses won the toss and played with the advantage of a very strong wind in the first half. This meant that our defence was under serious pressure throughout the half. They performed heroically throughout to keep the score to a respectable 2-2 to no score at half-time. Our girls went on the attack in the second half but couldn’t get the early score they needed as the physically stronger Pearses team broke up attack after attack. The effort required in the first half took its toll late in the game and Pearses scored a goal in injury time to win on a score line of 3-2 to no score. Our girls can be proud of the effort put in and gave a very good Pearses team a run for their money. Everyone gave their all but special mention must go to our corner back Natasha Keenan who settled herself well to have an excellent second half and Niamh Fitzgerald who was everywhere throughout in what was only her second game back from a serious injury. We now switch focus to the league which is scheduled to start on 10th May. Training continues on Thursday night at 5.45pm.
The team lined out as follows. 1. Ellen Cafferkey, 2. Katie Lohan, 3. Tara Murphy, 4. Natasha Keenan, 5. Laoise Mahon, 6. Chloe Mc Donnell, 7. Ciara Martin, 8. Anna Campbell, 9. Niamh Fitzgerald, 10.
