Removal of maternity outreach disappoints Naughten

Independent election candidate Denis Naughten has expressed his disappointment at the removal of maternity outreach services from Roscommon Town.

The weekly outreach maternity clinic had been operated by Portiuncula Hospital from the Primary Care Centre in Roscommon Town where expectant mothers could avail of all their antenatal requirements, from booking to delivery. However, news broke recently that this service was to be withdrawn.

“I have contacted the hospital group to express my disappointment with this,” stated Denis Naughten. “This was a vital service that also offered convenience to those availing of it. Again we see the situation where instead of expanding services outside of hospital settings we are now seeing the service withdrawn, adding to the chaos and congestion in many of our busiest hospitals.”

He continued: “In the space of one month we have now seen the withdrawal of two services from the Primary Care Centre in Roscommon – the Jigsaw service that will be suspended at the end of this month and the maternity outreach clinic.

“It’s disappointing to again see medical politics being used to withdraw services from County Roscommon.”
