MINOR LADIES WIN CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE

Clann na nGael 2-7 St. Ciarans 0-8
The Thomas Nolan Sponsored Clann Minor Girls Team are County Champions once again. The 2015 County Minor Final was finally played on Sunday 7th February in Kiltoom against St. Ciarans. This Final has been on and off since last September, all of which was outside of Clann’s control. However the wait was worth it in the end as the Clann Minors completed a 4 in a row at this level.

The conditions on the day were very poor and having lost the toss the Clann girls had to play against the wind and rain in the first half. From the first attack Clann scored a goal but St. Ciarans soon took control of the game and proceeded to put the Clann defence under severe pressure and scored a couple of points to lead the game. Clann had some chances to score themselves but handling errors in difficult conditions led to some turnovers which were duly punished. Clann knew if they could weather the “storm” in the first half and stay within a couple of scores the second half would be a different story. They managed to go in only 2 points down on a half time score of Clann 1:01 to St. Ciarans 0:06.

The second half was a different game and soon Clann began to dominate and scored their second goal of the day to take control of the match. St. Ciaran’s tried to work the ball up but time after time the Clann defence stood firm and defended with great discipline to set up further counter attacks. As Ciaran’s tried to stay in the game, space opened for the Clann girls, which they maximised to rattle off some great scores. In the end it was a great second half performance by the Clann Minors and all the subs that were used during the game made an positive impact to help Clann retain the Cup for an impressive 4th time.

UNDER 16 BOYS OPEN LEAGUE ACCOUNT WITH WIN OVER ORAN

CLANN NA NGAEL 4-16 ORAN 0-6
Clann U-16s opened their league campaign with a good win over a weakened Oran side on a cold Friday night last in Johnstown.
The cold conditions and a heavy pitch following the rain earlier in the day meant that good football was in short supply but both sides did their best in the testing conditions.
Clann dominated the game for long periods and deserved their win following a workmanlike performance but the team know tougher tests lie ahead.

JUNIORS LOSE OUT IN SEMI-FINAL

MICHAEL GLAVEY’S 1-08 CLANN NA NGAEL 1-05
Clann’s junior B team were knocked out of the Championship at the semi-final stage in terrible conditions against Michael Galvey’s.
Clann’s young team got off to a great start scoring 1-1 against the home team. A super goal from Ian Naughton & a point from play from Eoin o Neill gave Clann an early lead. Galvey’s played the first half with a strong breeze and they got back into the game, scoring 1-04 without reply. This was then followed with a red card for a Galvey’s midfielder for striking out at Clann’s center back Cormac Harney, and Clann got the last score of the half through an Eoin O’Neill free kick.

Things looked positive for Clann at half time but the conditions were getting worse by the minute. Galvey’s experience and being a physically bigger team just didn’t work out for a young Clann team, but their credit, Clann got back level on two occasions.

Seanie Walshe kicked a free and a huge score from the middle of the field to tie up the game, but Galvey’s went ahead again with 10 minutes remaining. A great move from the Johnstown men involving every line of the team right from Dylan Colgan in goal was finished off by an energetic Niall Connaughton. The game was in the melting pot at this stage, but a number of refereeing decisions favoured the home team and Galveys hit 3 frees to run out eventual winners.

Clann Team: Dylan Colgan, Darragh Lennon, Liam Óg Naughten, Shane Gavin, Niall Connaughton, Cormac Harney, Eddie McLoughlin, Paul Dunning, Aaron Shine, Shane Lacey, Daniel Harney, Eoin Hannon, Ian Naughton, Sean McManus, Eoin O’Neill.
