Roscommon County Council has been allocated over €220,000 to assist in the “Taking in Charge” of nine Housing Estates throughout the county.
The news comes following an announcement by the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government, Simon Coveney TD, of a total of €9 million in funding to assist local authorities in taking in charge 356 developments (accounting for over 17,000 households). In addition to the €9m allocation almost €4.5m of funding will be sourced by local authorities through bonds and other sources.
The nine estates and 157 households which have been earmarked for funding are as follows:
Antogher Court, Roscommon town, is set to receive €27,089.
Baile Na Mona, Ballinlough, is set to receive €16,665.
Barry’s Avenue and Barry’s Court, Tarmonbarry, are set to receive €22,268.
Cluain Bawn, Tarmonbarry, is set to receive €34,293.
Castlebawn, Ballintubber, is set to receive €26,031.
Cluain Ri, Kiltoom, is set to receive €19,502.
Coill Rua, Ballinameen, is set to receive €41,694.
Sli na Sruthain, Ballinlough, is set to receive €36,926.
Prior to the construction boom and subsequent crash, local authorities usually would either take an estate in charge (including roads, footpaths, water services etc) or could be requested by residents to do so once a residential estate was complete. However, where work had not been completed to satisfactory standards, there were sometimes delays in the taking in charge (TIC) process.
Hopkins welcomes funding
In welcoming the news Senator Maura Hopkins said, “I am delighted to see Roscommon benefiting from this fund, it is positive news for unfinished developments across the county, now that these developments will be under the remit of Roscommon County Council works to complete the estates can finally be carried out and ensure they are properly maintained going forward.”
She concluded, “Residents living in many of these estates have communicated concerns to me over the past number of years about their state of completion and the dangers posed. I am happy now to see the Government step in and complete development at these sites. “I hope works required will be completed in a short space of time.”
