Former Councillor Liam Callaghan has been elected by Fine Gael Delegate to fill the Boyle Municipal District seat on Roscommon County Council which was vacated by recently elected Senator Maura Hopkins.
Liam Callaghan previously served as a County Councillor for the old Castlerea area from 2009 until losing his seat in the 2014 Local Election.
Over 150 Party Members from the district went to the polls in the Percy French Hotel this evening.
Mr Callaghan defeated Boyle’s Jan Flanagan, Arigna’s Charlie Hopkins and Ann Higgins from Ballaghaderreen. Roscommon Galway Constituency Secretary Linda Doorley was nominated to contest the convention but withdrew this evening.
He will formally take up his seat at the next Roscommon County Council meeting which is scheduled for the end of the month.
