Fianna Fáil TD for Roscommon-Galway Eugene Murphy has urged people to be aware of changes to the passport application process which has resulted in delays in the system. He is warning people to ensure that they leave extra time to apply to ensure that they receive their passports on time.
Deputy Murphy commented, “Traditionally this time of year is always busy, and there’s an added surge in demand with football fans heading to Euro 2016 in France. However, changes to the applications process has added to the backlog, with delays of up to 6 weeks are being reported in some cases.
“New rules require all first-time passport applicants to have a valid public services card and some people may have to apply to the Department of Social Protection, which can delay the process.
“I’m urging anyone who may be travelling abroad for holidays this summer to ensure that they allow extra time for the processing of their passport. People should check their passport to ensure that it is still in date, as no-one wants to miss out on their holiday because they didn’t leave enough time to apply for their passport.
“Fianna Fáil has already raised this issue in the Dáil with the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade and has highlighted the need for this new requirement to be very clearly communicated to the public. It is imperative that the people are aware of this change to avoid unnecessary stress and delays”.
