A rule change at this week’s IFA AGM could pave the way for a new Connacht Regional Chairman to be elected soon.
The rule in question required that a candidate for the office of President, Deputy President or Regional Chairman be a Full-Time Farmer however following the vote the Regional Chairman has been deleted from the rule.
When the process for nominating the Connacht Regional Chair began Strokestown’s John O’Beirne was the only candidate to receive the required nomination from his own county and another county however he was later disqualified from the process due to the fact that he was not a full-time farmer at the time of his nominations.
A further round of nominations took place and all five counties in the region nominated their own candidate, which led to an ongoing stalemate. The counties were given numerous deadline to come up with a resolution but there was no breakthrough.
