Residents, staff and Day Care attendees at the Plunkett Community Nursing Unit in Boyle recently made a great contribution in filling a truck destined to the Vesnova Children’s Asylum in Chernobyl.
The truck was organised in conjunction with Leitrim Sean Nós dancer Edwina Guckian and the visit marked 30 years since the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster which happened on April 26th, 1986.
Items such as soaps, shower gels, shampoos, toothpaste, washing powder, sensory toys, disposable sheets and nappies were donated by Residents, Day Care attendees and Staff, which were sent off in the truck on February 2nd.
The Chernobyl Nuclear Station explosion was the biggest nuclear disasters of the 20th century. Tens of thousands of people living within the 30km the power station were evacuated, with hundreds of thousands of people suffering from radiation-related illnesses over the years.
