The Citizens Assembly is inviting members of the public, representative groups and citizen organisations in Roscommon to make a submission on the second topic the Assembly will consider ‘How we respond to the Challenges and Opportunities of an Ageing Population’.

2011 CSO figures showed there were 11,315 people over the age of 60 in Roscommon and 1.1 million people of the same demographic on the island of Ireland.1 By 2041 the CSO projects that this figure will more than double to 2.44 million aged 60 and over making up nearly one third of the island’s total population.2

Justice Laffoy said “An ageing population brings implications for policy, service delivery, and long-term planning in diverse areas such as health, housing, education and employment. Therefore is absolutely timely that the Assembly would give this topic due consideration with a view to making recommendations to the Houses of the Oireachtas.

“I would encourage people in Roscommon, both young and old, to make a submission on the topic and share with the members their views. Submissions can be made online or by post and the submissions will play a key role in helping develop the work programme on the topic and can ultimately shape the recommendations being made by the members to the Houses of Oireachtas.”

The closing date for submissions on this topic is Friday May 19th. All documents received by the Assembly secretariat may be listed on the website, in order of date received and displayed with a name/name of organisation, and the title of the submission.
Submissions can be made online at www.citizensassembly.ie or by post to Citizens Assembly, 16 Parnell Square, Dublin 1, to arrive no later than close of business 19th May 2017.
