Fianna Fáil TD Eugene Murphy has said that the Department of Health should do more to inform parents of children with severe, and permanent, disabilities of the availability of the Incapacitated Child Tax Credit.

Speaking on the issue Eugene Murphy said “The tax credit can be claimed by anyone who has a child who is permanently incapacitated either physically or mentally, and is worth at €3,300 per year per child.

Many parents are unaware of the availability of this tax credit, but it could make a major difference in the financial circumstances of the family. We are all too well aware of the additional pressures placed on family finances arising from caring for someone with a disability.I would urge everyone who is looking after a child with a severe disability to get in touch with their local Revenue office to see if they are eligible. This information needs to be communicated better to parents by the HSE following a diagnosis,” concluded Deputy Murphy.
