We look back on the action from the Roscommon Sports scene for the weekend including Handball, Camogie, Gaelic Games, Soccer and Rugby.
Roscommon GAA
Another Adult Championship Final and another Draw. This time it was the Senior Hurling Championship Final. First half goals from Featherstone (2) and Ryan helped Oran to a 3-5 to 0-7 lead over Four Roads at the interval. In the second half the reigning Champions showed why they had won eight titles in a row and outscored Oran by 10 points to three to clinch a draw – David Dolan with the equaliser from a free.
Elsewhere Tulsk won the O’Gara Cup and St Barrys won the Gavin Lee Cup. Catch up on all the weekend results here.
Soccer
Vincent Brooks looks back on the weekend’s action from the Roscommon and District Football League and despite a few games being cancelled there were plenty of goals.
In the Mid Western Girls Soccer League Castlerea Celtic Tigers captured the Westward Scania U12 League title following a thrilling finish to the season. They defeated league leaders Stroketown 4-2 to tie the league and won the play-off 1-0 thanks to Lyanu Wilson’s strike.
Elsewhere Kilkerrin United advanced to the second round of the FAI U14 Cup following a penalty shoot out win over Swinford.
Camogie
Senior Camogie Final
Athleague are the Senior Camogie Champions again, defeating Four Roads by 0-12 to 1-6. In the Under 16 A Final Padraig Pearses defeated Roscommon Gaels by 3-6 to 1-5.
Ladies Gaelic Football
Padraig Pearses qualified for the Connacht Ladies Intermediate Final. They defeated Eoghan Rua, Sligo by 4-11 to 1-8 and will face Annaghadown (Galway) in the Final.
On Saturday Michael Glaveys suffered a 3-7 to 5-16 defeat to Kilmoremoy (Mayo) in the Connacht Junior Semi-Final.
Handball
There were four Roscommon Handball Finals and three All-Ireland Finals this weekend but one was cancelled in bizarre circumstances. Read the round-up here.
Rugby
Kiltoom’s Jack Carty was on the scoresheet as Connacht defeated Toulouse 23-21 in the opening game of the European Champions Cup.
Danny Qualter and Jack’s brother Luke played for the Connacht Eagles but they suffered a 10-23 defeat to Cornish Pirates in the British and Irish Cup.
Cycling
On Thursday Daire Feeley 57th in the Road Race at the World Under 23 Cycling Championships in Qatar. Speaking after the Race Daire said “Great to end the season at the World Championships here in Qatar. Gave the race a good lash with a stint up the road but never worked out well done to the lads in the team who put in great performances.”
