Senior Championship
Defending county champions Athleague have made no mistakes in their round games securing another win at the weekend over Oran, with three games out of three in their round games they have had their eyes firmly fixed on the prize of contesting back to back county final titles.
This will not be plain sailing as their opposition will be Four Roads who were dethroned last year and will be trying to make amends to deny Athleague of the title, a thrilling encounter awaits us on October 15th. Four Roads overcame St. Dominics on a score line of 1-13 to 1-8.
Athleague and Oran faced off in the final round of the senior championship at Tremane last Saturday, a game that threatened postponement due to the heave rainfall but was played in tough playing conditions for both sides. Everything to be played for Oran were in a must win situation to have any hope of qualifying for the county final a tightly fought contest was hopefully going to be in store. Oran started brightly and a goal registered in the 5th minute, when a ball dropped into the full forward line and the Athleague backline came under immense pressure before Grainne Whyte managed to pull and hit the back of the nett. The free taking skills of Leah Rowe kept the score board ticking over and it was Athleague who were finding it difficult to come by scores being tightly marked by the Oran backs. At half time having secured 3 points in the last 5 minutes of play Athleague took the lead in a tightly fought first half on a scoreline of Oran 1-4 to Athleague 0-8. The second half saw some resolute defending from both teams and Oran struggled in this half to find scores owing mainly to the tight defence held strong by Athleague’s Niamh Farrell. Athleague came to life and with terrific runs from mid-fielders Laura Fleming and Rachel Fitzmaurice causing Oran some heart break. An early, Leanne Kelly, second half goal set up a victory for Athleague and when a free from the stick of Kelly Hopkins found its way into the back of the net, the outcome was in no doubt. Final score: Athleague 2-12 Oran 1-6
