Boyle Celtic bowed out of FAI Junior Cup following a 2-4 Penalty Shoot out defeat to Kilkenny side Evergreen FC in the Showgrounds, Sligo, this afternoon.
Boyle Celtic took the lead in the 35th minute when Man of the Match Danny Browne sent Evergreen keeper Packie Holden the wrong way following a foul on Dessie Carlos. The north Roscommon side held the lead until the 68th minute when Mikey Drennan equalised. 1-1 is how it ended and two ten minute periods of extra time also resulted in a stalemate. For the third time in their campaign a Boyle Celtic had gone to penalties.
Kyle Suffin, the hero in the previous shoot-out, began by saving Mikey Drennan’s spot kick. Next Danny Browne’s shot hit the crossbar. Evergreen then took the lead before Gerard McDermottroe’s kick was saved by Packie Holden. Evergreen then made it 2-0 before Aaron Murrin scored Celtic’s first. Conor English made it 3-1 for Evergreen despite Kyle Suffin getting a hand to it and then Niall Brennan scored to reduce the deficit.
Niall Andrews put away the decisive penalty to make it 4-2 for the Kilkenny side.
Although one competition came to an end for Boyle Celtic today there is another big game for the team to look forward to. They will face Killarney Celtic in the Qualifying Round of the Irish Daily Mail FAI Senior Cup on the weekend of April 30th.
