Our Roscommon Sports Round-up for February 20th includes Soccer, Gaelic Football, Hurling, Camogie, Rugby, Handball and Darts.

Soccer

The Roscommon and District Football League Team recorded a 3-0 win over Cavan-Monaghan in the Oscar Traynor Trophy. Vincent Brooks reports on that and all the local Challenge Cup action here.

Gaelic Games

A second defeat for the Roscommon Hurlers. Robert McConn reports from Down.

It was a bad weekend for Roscommon men playing in the Higher Education GAA Football Finals.
Boyle GAA’s Killian Cox was part of the RCSI side defeated by the Ulster University Magee in the Higher Education GAA Corn na Mac Leinn Final 1-14 to 1-17. St Brigid’s Niall McInerney and Strokestown’s Seán Mullooly were part of the UCD squad defeated by St Mary’s University College in the Higher Education GAA Sigerson Cup Final.

Ladies Gaelic

The Roscommon Ladies Gaelic Footballers drew with high-flying Meath. Read Ollie Colgan’s report here.

The Minor Ladies were defeated by Dublin in a Challenge and the Under 16s had a work-out against Offaly.

Rugby

Connacht got back to winning ways with a 14-9 win over Newport Gwent Dragons. Roscommon’s Denis Buckley and Jack Carty both played. Earlier today he was announced that former All Black Kieran Keane is to take over as Head Coach next season on a three year deal. He currently hold the position of Attack Coach with the Chiefs in Super Rugby. The team has scored an impressive 76 tries in 17 games during the 2016 campaign.

Roscommon’s Shane Layden missed the game as he was attending the Ireland Men’s Sevens 3 Day Training Camp in Portugal.

In the Connacht Junior 1A League Buccaneers defeated Galwegians 22-3 and Ballinasloe defeated Monivea 19-17.
In Division 1B Creggs defeated Loughrea 8-7. In 1C Carrick lost 7-10 to Corrib and Dunmore defeated Portumna 25-3.
In the J2 League Creggs suffered a 5-27 defeat against Galwegians.

In the Connacht Women’s League both Carrick and Buccaneers were defeated.

In underage rugby, Ballinasloe defeated Sligo 22-14 in the Under 15 League Final.
Creggs will face Corinthians in the U18.5 League final after their 13-5 victory over Ballina.
Buccaneers U20s defeated NUI Galway 43-10 in JP Flanagan Compeition.
Buccaneers Under 15 Girls defeated Corinthians 30-25.

Camogie

Kelley Hopkins scored 1-4 of Roscommon’s 1-5 in their 2-10 to 1-5 defeat to Dublin in the opening round of the National Camogie League on Saturday.

Handball

Aengus Cunningham reports on the weekend’s Roscommon Handball action including 7 Connacht titles for local players. Plus County Finals and All-Ireland games.

Darts

The Draws for the Roscommon Darts Cup and Shield Semi-Finals took place last night.
In the Cup Semi-Finals McDermotts will face The Forge and Daltons will face An Bothar Rua. First Team named has home advantage for the first leg on March 3rd. The second leg will be played on March 10th.

In the Shield Semi-Final The Hollywood Bar will host Creightons on March 3rd. The second leg will be played on March 10th. The winners will face Flanagans in the Final.
