Commenting earlier Terry Leyden said “As a former TD for Roscommon I am optimistic that Ballaghaderreen will lead the way and welcome our fellow citizens of the world to Ireland. People understand that these refugees have fled a war torn zone. It is not a question of “why us?” but “why not give us the lead?”.
“As I, with family and friends, founded Kosovo Refugee Aid in 1999 it is surely appropriate to help oppressed people from Syria here in Ireland. There is no point paying lip service while watching TV night after night and witness the tragedy of Syria, Iraq, Libya and other conflicts throughout the world, without stretching out our hand of friendship.
“I look forward to welcoming Syrian Refugees – men, women and children to Ballaghaderreen when they arrive and I offer my personal assistance in helping them settle in our county and country”.
