New Year’s Day 5k Run
Buccaneers U-17’s hosed a 5k Run on New Year’s Day with a reasonable turnout on a cold but sunny and dry afternoon. All participants and organisers are thanked for supporting this event, for which St. Hilda’s Services was the associate charity. First man home was Kevin Moore in a time of 16 minutes 6 seconds and Michelle Faller was the leading lady on a time of 21:55. Jenson Nagle took the juvenile honours on 19:40.
Connacht Eagles play London Irish in Athlone
Connacht Eagles return to Dubarry Park on Saturday January 14th when they take on London Irish in the British & Irish Cup. Danny Qualter has skippered this Connacht side this season and he will be hoping that his home ground will witness a change in the westerners’ fortunes. Flying winger Jordan Conroy got his first taste of action at this higher level recently and he capped it with a brace of tries against the Ospreys. Luke Carty is another rising star in the Buccaneers ranks who is likely to be involved while other upcoming Pirates players Cian Romaine, Conor McKeon, Rory Moloney, Saba Meunargia and Shane Delahunt are likely to feature. Stephen McVeigh could also make the squad following his recent injury. This match kicks off at 2pm on Saturday week.
Catherine Fulvio Cookery Demonstration
Buccaneers RFC are hosting a ‘Cookery Demonstration’ with popular TV chef Catherine Fulvio in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel, Athlone, from 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 26th. Ms. Fulvio is renowned for her cookery TV series’ and food writing including many cookbooks. RTE1 TV is currently showing her “Tastes Like Home” series and Catherine was also one of the presenters on the very successful “Lords and Ladles” series recently. At home she runs Ballyknocken House & Cookery School in Co. Wicklow. Tickets are €20 for this event by the very pleasant and charming Catherine and the event commences with a Cheese & Wine reception from 7.30 p.m. Tickets are now on sale at the Hotel and from The Bounty, A Room In Bloom and also at Cunningham Pharmacies, Monksland and Dublin Road, Athlone.
