St Comans are the new 40×20 Open Inter Club Connacht champions after they defeated Williamstown comfortably last Wednesday in the Galway club’s home court.
Still not firing on all cylinders, St Comans’ Rikki O’Gara had a good tussle with Ollie Conway in the first singles before going down 21-16, 21-18.
With the pressure on, the first-time doubles pairing of Niall McGrath and Darren Beatty put in an excellent performance beating Declan Connaughton and Kevin Craddock 21-13, 21-10 to give St Comans an 11 point lead going into the last singles.
Neil McDermott and Pat Conway have a long history going back to their college days with Neil usually getting the upper hand and it was no different on this occasion as he had a surprisingly easy 21-10, 21-4 win to cement the win for St Comans.
The Semi-Finals and Final will be held this weekend in Collohill, Co. Laois. Breacach from, Co. Tyrone will be St Coman’s Semi-Final opponents. The other Semi-Final is between Kells, Co. Kilkenny and Mallow, Co. Cork.
