Vincent Brooks looks back on the weekend’s action, in the Roscommon and District Football League and FAI Junior Cup.
Moore United (pictured above) moved to second place in The Herald Premier Division of the Roscommon and District Football League, five points behind leaders Ballymoe, following a hard earned 2 – 1 win over Skyvalley Rovers at Falty Park Moore. Mark Duignan opened the scoring for Moore United after twenty minutes with a well struck free kick. Vinnie Costello headed an equaliser with fifty three played and only a brilliant save by David Keenan denied him a second shortly afterwards. Just when it looked like the game would finish level Andy Nevin went down in the Skyvalley Rovers penalty area and he then converted the resultant penalty kick.
Ahascragh United had their first win of the season when they beat St Johns Athletic 3 – 2 at Ahascragh. Kevin Bannerton gave the home side a 1- 0 lead after fifteen minutes of play and Tom Appleby levelled the game with eight minutes left in the first half. Chris Hurley added a well taken goal to give the Lecarrow side a 2- 1 lead with sixty three played. Lee Johnston levelled the game before a great run by Evan Keenan created an opening for Joe Hunt to score the winner in the last minute of the game.
Ballaghaderreen beat Brazukas 6 – 2 at Ballaghaderreen. Marchelo scored after ten minutes to give the Brazilians the lead. However Lee Keenan levelled the game six minutes later and James Horan and Gerry Ward added two more for the winners before the break. In the second half Thomas Greene scored his first goal for the club before Lee Keenan completed his hat trick and Marchelo added a second for Brazukas.
In the FAI Junior Cup
Ballinasloe Town are through to round five following a narrow 1 – 0 win over Castlerea Celtic at Ballinasloe; Mark Richardson scored the only goal of the game. Former Roscommon and District Football League side Boyle Celtic beat Shiven Rovers 5 -2 at Boyle. The Newbridge side took the lead in the first half when Francis Kilcommins converted a penalty kick. After the break Danny Browne and Michael Corrigan scored two each and Shane Battles one with Niall Heavey pulling one back for the losers.
Dysart stretched their lead at the top of the Norios Take Away sponsored Roscommon and District Football League Division 1 points table to six points following a 5 – 1 win over Rahara Rovers at Rahara.
Paul Higgins, John Coyne and Eoin Fallon gave them a 3 – 1 half time lead. James Corbett and Ronan Mc Donnell added two more after the break with Sean Commane replying for the losers.
Dunmore Town share second place with Cloonfad United who had a free day. They beat Loughglynn United 3 – 1 at Dunmore. Ger Canny, Conor Gleeson, Ryan Fox scored the goals for Dunmore.
Lough Harps and C P Ajax drew 1 – 1 at Ballinlough. Caoilain Fitzmaurice scored for Lough Harps before Paul Mee converted a penalty kick for the Castleplunket side to win a point.
In the local derby game at Glenamaddy the home side were beaten 3 – 1 by Kilkerrin United. Mike Duffy David Fahy and Keith Mc Mahon scored for Kilkerrin United. Michael Geraghty replied for the losers.
In the Kileen Sportsgrounds sponsored Roscommon and District Football League Division 2 Strokestown continue to lead this Division.
Following a 6 – 2 win over Shiven Rovers at Newbridge. Aidan Dooney scored two and Padraig O’Beirne, Daniel Rodgers, Kevin Finn and David Parker added one each.
Moore United remain in second place after beating a young and talented Ballinagare 3 – 1 at Ballinagare. The home side took the lead through young Barry Potter. However Moore then scored two before half time and held out until five minutes from full time when they sealed all three points with a third goal. Alan McManus, Tom Naughton and Liam Ryan scored for the winners.
Skyvalley Rovers were beaten 2 – 1 at home by Roscommon United. Darren Mainwarraig and Ivan Conneely scored for Roscommon United and Sean Kenny scored for the home side
Dunmore Town and Cloonfad united drew 3 – 3 at Cloonfad. Anthony Broderick gave Dunmore a 1 – 0 lead with twelve played and Bobby Douglas levelled the game just before half time, Niall Rattigan added two more for Dunmore before James McDonagh and Bobby Douglas levelled the game with two goals in the last five minutes of the game.
Moylough 79 beat Cam Celtic 3 – 0 at Moylough. Adam Connolly scored two and Michael Foley one to keep the Moylough unbeaten run on track.
