Berendsen have confirmed plans to close their Distribution Centre in Roscommon Town as it has become “unsustainable”.
Reports of the possible closure first emerged late last night (Wednesday). In a statement release earlier the company said that the closure is subject to a 30-day consultation process which will begin next week.
The company provides leasing, sourcing, cleaning and maintaining of textiles for industry, hospitality, and healthcare industries. Berendsen was formerly known as Spring Grove Services and 20 people are currently employed at their facility on the Athlone Road in Roscommon Town.
It is believed that the reason behind the closure is consolidation with the duties of the Roscommon business being taken on by their existing facilities in Dublin and Cork. Berendsen have said that the decision is no reflection on it’s loyal and hard-working staff.
Speaking following last night’s news Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice said “Roscommon Town can ill afford to lose 20 jobs”. He added “I am calling on my constituency colleague Minister Naughten to use his good offices to address this serious situation as soon as possible and to contact the relevant Government agencies immediately. Moving this operation to Dublin or Cork is not much good to the people who are to lose their jobs and I will be contacting the company on Thursday to arrange an immediate meeting to see if this situation can be averted.”
“There are so few people in employment in private businesses in rural towns like Roscommon it would be a disaster if 20 jobs were to be lost. We have to everything in our power to try to save these jobs being lost” he concluded.
