Lots of things to do in Roscommon during National Heritage Week

National Heritage Week takes place between the 20th and 28th of August and there will be Lots of things to do in Roscommon as well as nationwide.

This year’s theme is ‘One Hundred Years of Heritage.’

In this our centenary year, what better time to celebrate the last 100 years of Ireland’s heritage: historical, archaeological, architectural and environmental. How did people live, what did they eat, how did they travel, what jobs did they do?  What was life like for a soldier, a farmer, a nurse or a schoolchild? What was important to those that lived in Ireland then, are these things still important to us now? What has been saved and what has disappeared?

Over twenty five community groups, organisations and individuals have organised more than one hundred events around County Roscommon to celebrate the rich and diverse heritage that is there for us all to enjoy. Events range from lectures, launches, nature walks, archaeology site visits, visits to historic houses & gardens, music and song to family fun days. Many of the events are free and the programme highlights the abundance of great work that is carried out in communities all around county Roscommon to care for and promote our built, natural and cultural heritage.

“Events are taking place from the north to the very south of the county, so no matter where you live there should be a Heritage Week event on near you! There is lots to do for all ages and all the family during National Heritage Week and best of all most of it is free, so enjoy the week”, says Nollaig Feeney, Heritage Officer, Roscommon County Council.
