Were you on the gamble at the Roscommon Races last Tuesday, August 2nd?<.h4>It always pays to go racing at Roscommon.
Next Monday, August 15th, there’s more reasons than ever, with it being family day, bargain price admission, free entertainment for children, fashion competitions for women and men, top class racing, music, special student price, and much more. The first white flag will be raised at 5.20 p.m..
For trainer Charlie Byrnes and jockey Davy Russell and all those who were on the big gamble last time out, the day couldn’t have gone better.
And next Monday promises to be another great day, with Family Day always managing to maintain its own unique atmosphere. For the bargain price of €10, one parent and three children can gain admission, with two parents and up to six children available at €20. Patrons should note this is a special family concession (children under 16) with standard prices applying otherwise: adults €13; OAPS €8. There is a special admission price for students for just €5 (student ID Cards must be produced on the day).
With it being a family evening, there is fantastic free entertainment for the children to include Pirate Boat Train, Disco Dome, Rock and Roll Gladiator and Face Painting.
There are a number of added attractions to participate in, or simply just have a good browse, such as: Most Stylish Hat competition (open to both male and female), first prize €400 (cash), with two runner-up prizes of €100 each (cash). Celebrity judge, Martha Lynn, Milliner, a native of Roscommon, who is making quite a name for herself in the world of fashion. There is a Best Dressed Male competition sponsored by Donnellan & Co. with a first prize of a suit, shirt and tie, while the remaining four finalists will receive a €50 voucher for the award winning Donnellan & Co. Judging this event will be Mr. Ireland (Darren King), who is native of Brideswell.
“We try to accommodate everyone on Family Day and we think next Monday’s events and attractions appeal to a wide audience. There’s something for everyone, though we’ll ask for more and hope there’s a little bit of sunshine too,” said Racecourse manager, Michael Finneran.
On the racing front, Monday’s card is an all flat meeting. Races are being sponsored by Pyramid Bookmakers, Murray Ambulance Service, Richard Keogh, Irish Jockey’s Association and EBF while Gerry Gill Motors sponsor the Best Turned Out Horse in each race. The card also features The Sean Cleary Memorial Handicap. Who can ever forget the celebrations after this race last year when the winner of this race was trained by the late Sean’s father, Tom Cleary, who is based outside Athlone.
There will be music in the bar on Monday after the second last race with Billy Garvin, while there is a free bets competition on the race card.
