Customers in Roscommon can now avail of a first of its kind protection plan from independent broker IrishInsurance.ie to cover overseas medical treatment for a range of illnesses including cancer and conditions requiring neurosurgery.
The policy, offered by Aviva Life & Pensions is unique to the Irish market and pays the policyholder or their child a pre-determined daily cash amount – plus covered travel and accommodation expenses – to help towards the cost of medically necessary treatment overseas in Europe or the US.
Costing €12.50 monthly per life insured – plus any children under 21 for free – Overseas Treatment Plan is an additional optional benefit with a range of selected Aviva protection policies. It was developed in conjunction with Best Doctors®, a worldwide network of over 53,000 leading medical professionals across 450 specialities. In the event of a diagnosis of a covered illness, the policyholder can access the Best Doctors network for a second medical opinion, and if eligible, they can then go on to receive medical treatment in a world-class medical treatment centre in the US or Europe.
Overseas Treatment Plan will cover both patient and companion travel and accommodation costs, and provided they have received treatment for 2 days, a daily benefit amount is paid to the policyholder depending on treatment duration. A pre-determined amount of €30,000 per day is paid for the first seven days of treatment in the US and €15,000 for the first seven days of treatment in Europe. For any remaining days up to a total of 60 days, €100 per day is paid for treatment in both the US and Europe.*
If it’s a child claiming, Overseas Treatment Plan will also cover travel and accommodation costs for both parents or a parent and companion. Any children of the policyholder (or children of their spouse/ civil partner) are automatically covered under the policy up to the age of 21.
Commenting on the new plan, Chris McKenzie, from IrishInsurance.ie, said:
“For customers in Roscommon who are considering taking out a new protection policy or making a switch, this new enhanced offering from Aviva offers a benefit that isn’t available elsewhere for a low premium of just €12.50 per month. This product fills a gap that many people often assume has been covered by their health insurance and we see a big market for it as customers seek to ensure their family is looked after.”
Commenting on this new innovation, Gary Marshall, Managing Director of Aviva Life & Pensions Ireland said:
“We’re so aware these days of cases where children and adults have needed treatment overseas and the tremendous fundraising efforts required to secure this. The Overseas Treatment Plan is designed for to make sure our customers and their families are as protected for the future as they can be. In Ireland, currently 1 in 3 of us will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage of our lifetime*, a disease that is becoming more and more treatable with advances in medical treatment. We believe everyone deserves access to the best possible medical care – regardless of where that care may be.”
Frank Ahedo, Managing Director of Best Doctors in Europe said the company was pleased to be strengthening its relationship with Aviva. “Best Doctors was founded over 25 years ago with the aim of identifying the world’s finest medical specialists in their field, as recommended by peers. By bringing all of these specialists together in one network, we have carried out the research needed to identify where the leading experts for different treatments are, connecting Aviva customers with the best medical treatment available across Europe and the US.”
