Michael Fitzmaurice TD is calling on the Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed to extend the deadline for the sowing of “wild bird cover” which is one of the elements of the GLAS scheme.
“With the weather the way it has been over the past few months, and I realise there is a pick up in the weather at the moment, but under the GLAS scheme farmers are required to put in wild bird cover. Unfortunately in many areas and especially in this region, ploughs simply cannot work the land at the moment.
I am calling on the new Minister for Agriculture to give an extension on this scheme to at least the middle of June to help these farmers in this situation. I do not want to see farmers penalised for something that is totally out of their hands as they cannot control the weather” he concluded.
