Athlone Town welcome Drogheda United to Athlone Town Stadium tomorrow (Friday 6th May) looking to close the gap on the five teams ahead of them and push towards a play-off spot, which this season looks attainable by anyone of 6 teams.
Heading into this game Athlone lie in 6th spot five points off UCD in fifth and eight behind 2nd position.
After securing their first win of the season two weeks ago Athlone travelled to Tolka Park last Friday where they lost out 2-1 to Shelbourne.
Drogheda United are on a good run of form having remained unbeaten for their last 4 games with their only loss in April coming against Limerick where they kept the unbeaten Mid-West side to 3-0.
When the teams met in United Park earlier this month it ended in a 2-2 with Marco Chindea securing the Athlone point thanks to an injury time goal.
The teams have met on 20 occasions in the league and cup since 1995 with Athlone Town winning 6, Drogheda United winning 7 with the remaining 7 ending in draws. In these draws only one has ended scoreless and that came back on 6th April 2001.
Games between the sides produce goals as well with the 20 games played showing 59 goals scored at an average of 2.95 per game. Athlone also secured their biggest win of their short time in the 2014 Premier Division when they scored 6 without reply the last time the teams met in Athlone Town Stadium while Drogheda won by a score of 5-2 in the League Cup back in 2012 at the same venue.
The good news for Alan Mathews is that he has a full squad to choose from with no suspensions and, at the time of writing, no injuries to report.
Kick off at the Athlone Town Stadium is scheduled for 7.45pm.
