Elphin Boxing Club hold successful tournament

Elphin Boxing

On Saturday night Elphin Boxing Club held its inaugural tournament in the local Community Centre.

The committee of this new Club, run tirelessly by Johnny Maher, welcomed boxers and patrons who travelled from far and near. The large crowd enjoyed the night’s entertainment and cheered on all the boxers as they battled it out representing their clubs. The club wish to thank all their sponsors, The Percy French Hotel, Elphin Pharmacy, Cloonacauneen Castle, Galway; Michael Cull; McDonnells Centra, Strokestown; Clarkes Buses; Ivy Rose, Strokestown; Eurospar Strokestown with a special work of thanks to Michael Moran who sponsored the trophies and medals.
Thank you to Michael Fitzmaurice TD and Emmett Corcoran who travelled to present the boxers with their medals and Donal Lynch for picking “boxer of the night” who was Evan Gunn (Elphin). Thanks also to the
referees, judges, MC Gordon Murray, Hughie Durr, Padraig Durr, Shane Farrell, Noel Lynch and the ladies who provided the refreshments. A special word of thanks to John Gormley who was medical supervisor on
the night and to the Sharkey and Ward families for their continued support throughout the year.

Last but not least the club would like to thank the parents of the children in all the boxing clubs present and of course a special word of thanks to the coaches who volunteer their time for the love of the sport of boxing.

Elphin Boxing club would like to wish Cathal Murray a speedy recovery. Cathal’s son, Evan, is a member of the Club.
