Connacht Ladies Gaelic Championships launched

Roscommon

Western Gaels and Roscommon star Jenny Higgins helped launch the TG4 sponsored Connacht Ladies Gaelic Football Senior and Intermediate Championships at the Connacht GAA Centre.

Both the TG4 Senior and Intermediate Finals will be played on Sunday 3rd July at Elvery’s McHale Park Castlebar.

This is the fifth year of the Connacht Intermediate Championship where Leitrim, Roscommon and Sligo will contest for the final with the ‘Gift of Life Cup’. Roscommon and Sligo begin the campaign on Sunday with the winners playing Leitrim the following week. Roscommon contested the first three finals with Sligo with the latter taking all the spoils. Leitrim are the holders where they had a three point win over Sligo in 2015.

Roscommon open their campaign this Sunday when they host Sligo in Peadar Earley Memorial Park, Ballinalough at 2pm – Note change of venue from some listings.

Galway and Mayo will meet in a hugely anticipated senior clash in which the Mayo team under the guidance of Frank Browne will be hoping to make home advantage count. Mayo’s good run in the Lidl National League has really put them in a strong position for the championship. Galway is looking for their fifth title in a row under new manager Willie Ward. However, this Galway side recently had retirements of Annette Clarke and Lorna Joyce. Many of the big names have yet to return to the fold like Emer Flaherty, Sinead Burke and Geraldine Conneally and many others. However, Mayo will present a determined opponent with the likes of Sarah Rowe and Aileen Gilroy returning after a spell of injuries. They are assisted with experience from Yvonne Byrne, captain Sarah Tierney, Fiona McHale and the legendary Cora Staunton amongst their ranks.

The Connacht Ladies Gaelic Council greatly acknowledges the significant financial contribution of TG4 to Ladies Gaelic Football in the Province and they wish all counties, management teams and in particular the players all the best for the championships and thanked them for their continued support to Ladies Gaelic Football.
