Cloonfad United News update April 4th

Roscommon and District Football League Masters Oscar Traynor Cup

Defeat away to St Johns Athletic on Sunday means only a highly unlikely sequence of results will keep Cloonfad Utd in the Premier Division next season.

Morgan Lyons gave us a seventh minute lead but straight away from tip-off the home-side were level. Lyons got his second with a brilliant effort on 13 minutes. The turning point came just before half time when Cloonfad were denied a blatant penalty for a push on Kieran Kiely and St Johns swept down field to score the equalizer which to many observers was offside as well. St Johns were the better side in the second half and deservedly took the lead on 68 minutes despite a couple of brilliant saves from Kurt Reinhdart. Shaun Kearney and Cormac Costello missed wonderful opportunities for Cloonfad to draw level and with the game in injury time Cloonfad forced a corner with Costello’s header hitting the post. St Johns cleared the ball, broke up field and with the Cloonfad defence all pushed up scored the insurance goal. Thanks to management, players and supporters for their effort last Sunday.

We face title chasing Moore Utd this Saturday night where anything other than a victory will send us to the second tier of Roscommon soccer for the first time since 1982.
