Senior Football:
O’Gara Cup Football: St. Dominics 0-7 St. Faithleachs 0-12. Dominics opened the 2016 season with a five point loss to a strong and experienced Faithleachs side in Knockcroghery on Sunday last, 14th February. A minutes silence for Club stalwart Eamon Beattie preceded this game. From the start even with the aid of the wind Dominics found it hard to penetrate the strong Ballyleague defence. Faithleachs opened with a point but Anthony Kelly levelled matters in the 4th minute, then Faithleachs scored four points to lead by four by the 18th minute. Dominics had their best spell of the match in the ten minutes before half time scoring four points of their own, two Conor Fallon frees and two from play from Brendan O’Meara and Michael Mc Gloin to leave it 0-5 to 0-5 at the break. Dominics made a few positional changes at half time to a more defensive set up to contain Faithleachs who now had a strong breeze and this worked well for 15 minutes with both sides adding a further two points apiece in this period, Conor Fallon and Ultan Kelly frees. The final quarter belonged to Faithleachs who moved with purpose and with Ciaran Murtagh pulling the strings the Ballyleague men scored five unanswered points to run out winners on the day. Dominics tried hard all through the match but manager Malachy Gately will know that they will have to be more cohesive as a team and more clinical in front of goals. There were a lot of positives also with many of the younger players getting game time and great performances from Brendan O’Meara, Michael Byrne, Paddy Fallon, Eoin McCormack, Sub Michael McGloin and Mark Miley back to his brilliant best in goal. Next week we play Michael Glaveys in Knockcroghery at 2pm. Team – M Miley, M Byrne, N Watson, L Kenny, T Gately, P Fallon, B O’Meara (0-1), E Mc Cormack, S Farrell, N Carney, C Fallon (0-3), O Milton, T Hurley, U Kelly (0-1), A Kelly (0-1). Subs – M Mc Gloin (0-1) for A Kelly, K Dockery for N Carney, D Corcoran for L Kenny, K O’Beirne for C Fallon. Training continues on Wednesday at 8pm and Friday at 8.30pm.
