Carrick Rugby Club Notes February 1st

Carrick U14 away to Castlebar

(By B. Kelly)
On Sunday the January 31st Carrick U14’s suffered their first league defeat of the season going down 26 – 10 to Castlebar. Conditions were not ideal for rugby with rain, strong winds and heavy conditions underfoot limiting the prospect of good open rugby.
Carrick Rugby
Carrick started brightly with some excellent play which saw James Honeyman going over in the corner for the first try. Castlebar struck back within minutes using the physical strength of their pack to score their first try of the day followed by an excellent conversion. Another well worked try by Carrick saw Honeyman cross the line in the opposite corner to put Carrick into the lead. Castlebar adapting better to the conditions on the day kept the ball close in hand using the power of their pack and centres to drive over for 3 more tries and 2 conversions.

Carrick U14 now prepare for their last 2 league matches and the upcoming Cup competition.

Carrick U13’s travel to Mullingar for challenge game

CRFC U13s played a friendly game with Mullingar on Saturday 30 January 2016 in preparation for the upcoming cup matches. Carrick were missing some key players on the day and this allowed Mullingar get the better of the early exchanges as some Carrick players became familiar with their new positions. As the half progressed the Carrick players becoming more determined started to play with confidence and determination crossing the Mullingar line to score 2 tries and 2 conversions.
The second half started positively for Carrick however picking up a few injuries and lack of adequate cover in key positions affected the team’s ability to be more competitive.
Overall the team played very well and the positive winning attitude of the players made the difference in this very competitive fixture.
