Former Grade 1 winning trainer Sandra Hughes will start a new role with Roscommon Racecourse as Owners and Sponsors Liaison on June 12th.

Sandra who plans to have last runner at Down Royal this Friday, approached Roscommon Racecourse Manager Michael Finneran and after consulting with his board, he was pleased to offer the role to Sandra which involves entertaining sponsors and owners on race days.

Finneran explained, “It’s an important role and now that Sandra has handed in her licence, I was keen to offer this role to her.” He added, “She brings a huge amount of experience with her and I spoke to my board and they were delighted to take her on for the remainder of the season. The role will involve entertaining and looking after sponsors and owners and it’s something that needs to be done. I am delighted that she has accepted my offer and I have no doubt that she will be a huge asset to us.”

“We have a great relationship with our sponsors and they along with our owners must be looked after when they go racing and I think Sandra is ideal for that role.”

Speaking about her appointment Sandra Hughes said, “To be honest, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do once the horses left the yard. Then this role came up and I was very keen to remain in racing and this offer comes at the perfect time for me.”

“I have been going racing for the last forty years and looking after owners and sponsors is very important and my role is to improve their race day experience.”

“I have always loved going racing to Roscommon. There is always a wonderful atmosphere there. The fixtures are well attended and I am thrilled to have been offered this role. I’ll do my very best to make it a success and ensure that sponsors and owners are well looked after.”
