The Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Dr Katherine Zappone TD, has announced that €14,000 has been awarded to Roscommon County Council for enhancements to the Playground in Castlerea Demense.

Roscommon is one of 22 Local Authorities to benefit from the scheme, which had a total value of €250,000. Making the announcement Minister Zappone said “Every child needs access to play areas. We are now focusing our support on those projects which are inclusive, accessible, safe and take into account the views of children and young people. Play areas must give a sense of adventure. They must compete with hi-tech games to bring excitement into the lives of our children which is why I welcome projects which are innovative. The benefits of play are well known – it is good for health, creates new friendships and brings excitement into young lives. With this funding it is my hope that another generation will get to know the joy of the playground. “

Welcoming the news Minister Denis Naughten said

“This significant grant from the Department of Children and Youth Affairs under the leadership of my Cabinet colleague Minister Katherine Zappone, will be used for new and creative play and recreation projects and the improvement of existing schemes,” confirmed Naughten.

“I echo the comments of Minister Zappone who has paid tribute to the commitment of community groups and local authorities who are working together to improve the quality of the play and recreation facilities available to children and young people.”
