The Roscommon Minor Camogie team got their All-Ireland C campaign off to a good start with a 4-7 to 1-5 win over Carlow in O’Hanrahan’s GFC on Saturday.

Roscommon were quickest to settle and good work by Maria Lohan in midfield had the Carlow defence under sustained pressure in the first quarter. This resulted in well taken points from play from Gráinne White and Julie Healy and a point from a 20m free by Shauna Fallon. Ceara Mulry was quick off her line to prevent early Carlow scores and Lisa Mullen was hurling well in the half back line. Carlow were eventually getting to grips with the game and Anna Breen opened the scoring with a point from a 30m free. The same player then missed the target from play and another placed ball shortly after. Roscommon also spurned a few chances before Breen scored again from a ’45. Carlow were growing in confidence and after a strong run full forward Rachel Sawer raised the first green flag of the day. Roscommon responded in style with an inch perfect goal from Alisha Lenehan and a point from play from Gráinne White. Eimear McNally began to stamp her authority on proceedings in the Roscommon defence and Shauna Fallon finished the half scoring another 20m free to leave her side 1-5 to 1-2 up at the break.

The second half saw the introduction of Tulsk player Kathy Jones to wing forward. She settled quickly sending a cross-field pass to club mate Alisha Lenehan who neatly bisected the posts. Shauna Fallon shot wide from a free having picked up an injury and Carlow’s Ciara Kavanagh opened her sides scoring in the second half with a 30m free. Roscommon were dominating the right flank with Aine O’Meara in flying form. Carlow goalie Hannah Rapley made a good save from a low shot but the recently introduced Patsy Farrell hit the net from the rebound. Carlow responded with another score from a placed ball by Ciara Kavanagh. The score of the game followed, great work in the middle third saw Kathy Jones win possession and deliver a pass to Alisha Lenehan in the left corner. Alisha crossed to Gráinne White on the 13m line and the corner forward rifled a shot into the top of the net. Eimear McNally gave a great display of high fielding in the Roscommon defence and Shauna Fallon and Ciara Kavanagh traded points before the final whistle.

John Benton and his selectors can be proud of their team on a job well done. They travel to Cavan on March 18th for their next outing.
