Clann na nGael
Team of 1966 honoured

The Roscommon GAA County Board honoured the senior football championship winning team of 1966 on Sunday. Clann were the winners fifty years ago with a panel captained by Tony Whyte. They defeated Elphin on a score line of 2-9 to 1-6. This was a panel of stars and future stars. This was the second county title having won it in 1961 with fourteen of this 66 panel.

The team unfortunately have lost four of the winning panel, some very recently. Johnny O’Neill, Seamie his brother, Tommy Cunniffe and Tommie Naughton – we are glad to say all were represented on the day. I thank the people who travelled to represent their loved ones. The panel assembled in Johnstown on Sunday before the county final for lunch and some reminiscing. Thanks to the Paddy McCaul and The Shamrock Lodge for providing the food and Mary Keena, Mary O Brien and PJ for presenting the clubhouse in all its glory.

The panel were transported via the Club Rossie Bus to Kiltoom, driven by our own Liam Connaughton. Thanks to Roscommon GAA Vice Chairman Padraig Naughton for organising same. This was a great honour for the men of 1966 and wonderful day was had by all and thanks to the people who travelled and made it possible. The panel were introduced at half-time by Clann Chairman Declan Rock. Thanks to the Roscommon County Board and Michael Mc Donnell, Chairman St Brigids for their hospitality.
