Roscommon County Council has been allocated €200,000 for flood works throughout the county, Minister Denis Naughten has confirmed.
The works will directly address the flooding of homes and property which occurred last winter and is on foot of detailed work performed by a team of dedicated staff at Roscommon County Council. This involved inspecting the situation on the ground last winter, followed by the collection of flood data and design work on potential solutions which were then present to the Office of Public Works for funding.
“Works have already commenced at some locations and all works will be completed in the coming months. These are practical steps which it is hoped will solve the threat of flooding to homes in the areas concerned,” stated Minister Naughten.
“Following a meeting between officials from the OPW, Roscommon County Council, Minister Sean Canney and myself we have been able to progress works at six locations and work is ongoing in conjunction with my officials in the Geological Survey of Ireland to address issues surrounding flooding problems at turloughs throughout County Roscommon.
“Monitoring of water levels has commenced on the turloughs and the release of dye has taken place at the swallow hole at Lough Funshinagh as a result of advice from a team of experts which has been brought together by my Department to try to get answers to what exactly is happening with all our turloughs.”
Minister Denis Naughten added: “Later this month an aerial survey of the turloughs in counties Roscommon, Galway and Longford which caused flooding last winter will commence under the supervision of a team in my Department and this will provide vital data to assist Roscommon County Council and the OPW in providing possible solutions to the turloughs issue.
“I want to thank Minister Sean Canney for his assistance in progressing these projects and I look forward to his assistance in addressing other flooding problems throughout Roscommon and Galway,” concluded Denis Naughten.
Details of the projects
€64,800 has been allocated for works at Killeglan Stream, near Taughmaconnell. The work will consist of the replacement of a culvert at Onagh and the removal of growth from Killeglan Stream over distance of 5kms.
€54,000 has been allocated to carry out maintenance on the Ogulla River, in the Tulsk/Castleplunkett area. The work will also see the replacement of culverts and repairs to the existing weir structure.
€27,000 has been allocated for the installation of a drain to divert surface water to open drain at Beagh Brabazon, Creagh.
€20,700 has been allocated for the installation of a culvert drain & inspection chamber at Moneymore, near Knockcroghery.
€18,000 has been allocated for the raising of ground levels and the installation of piping at Fairhill, Dysart.
€18,000 has also been allocated for the installation of piping at Curnalee, Curraghboy.
