Extend the Bank Holiday weekend at Roscommon Races

Roscommon Races
Favourite backers didn’t have it all their own way at the Roscommon Races two-day meeting in July, but with a full National National Card next Tuesday, August 2nd, racegoers will be hoping to make a few quid back.

The first race is set to get under way at the earlier time of 5:40pm.

Due to inclement weather for the races in both June and July, the steeplechase course is not fit for racing on this occasion and therefore the steeplechases that were to be ran are being replaced with hurdle races.
Three weeks ago a couple of 33/1 shots came in, there was a local winner while Gordon Elliot’s yard was in great form.

On Tuesday, there is a six-race card, made up of five hurdle races and a bumper. The sponsors on the evening are The Railway Bar, J. F. Hanley, Paul Byron Shoes, Eurona Brisknet, Class Grass and Michael Holland Tyres. The Best Turned Out Prize in each race is sponsored by P & G Cards, Athleague. Indeed with a lot of racecourses around the country finding it difficult to attract sponsors, it’s worth noting that all races at Roscommon next Tuesday are sponsored.

“Traditionally, this meeting is very well supported. We have our loyal followers to thank for this, and it’s the time of year when there are many holiday-makers in the region,” said Roscommon Racecourse manager, Michael Finneran.

“Racing in June and July this year was very difficult due to weather conditions and hopefully our turn for some sunshine will come for our meetings in August,” added Mr. Finneran.

Of course, with the festival at Ballybrit in Galway running from Monday to Sunday of this week, there is sure to be plenty of racing followers from within and outside of the county who will take in some of the action in Galway before going racing in Roscommon on Tuesday.

There is music in the main bar after the second last race with Billy Garvin.
