It has been another busy week at Carrick Golf Club with internal and inter-club competitions going strong.
Coffey’s Pastry Case Stableford

Barry Crowe let loose in the inaugural Coffey’s Pastry Case sponsored Stableford held on Sun 22 May, shooting 48 points, his score was made up of 30 points on F9 & 18 on B9, some say he was pulling up but that’s a bit harsh Jeff !
Second with an equally impressive 43 points was David McDermott who shot a one under par 69 to equal the course record, again, standing on 15th tee David was 3 under, but bogeys on 15 & 16 meant the course record stays in tact.
Pat King won the gross with 29 points & third with 41 points Kevin McDermott.

D&D Insurance Stableford

With only a point between them the top three scores in this week’s competition were:
1st Geraldine Farry (37pts)
2nd Mary King (36 pts)
3rd Phil Emmett (35 pts)

Carrick Golf Club Match Plays

The Club match plays 4Some & 4Ball were reduced to 16 teams each this year much to the disquiet of the teams who didn’t qualify, but the decision by competition secretary was proved right as all first round matches in both competitions were completed on the due dates. In the 4Ball there was one “giant killing” with the St Michaels Kevin’s McDermott & Gilboy beating Jim King & Adrian Beirne 5/4.
Damien Quigley & Kevin Sheeran knocked out Tommy Aherne & Niall Loftus on the 20th. Former winners David McDermott & Fiachra Neary knocked out Peadar Griffin & Padraig MacShera 5/4 apparently Nero done all the damage, if you can believe that.
Only surprise in 4Some was former winners Noel & David McDermott beaten by Tommy Aherne & Declan Loftus. Last years semi finalists Pat King & Andy Connellan had a close shave with Gary Ward & Martin Hunt edging out the newcomers on the 18th.
Quarter final matches to be completed by 12 June in the 4Some & 19 June in 4Ball.

Inter Club

Last Sunday the Pierce Purcell Carrick Golf team beat Ballaghaderreen 4-1. This result means the club is alive on three fronts, Seniors who play Strandhill tomorrow, Wednesday 1st June, Cecil Ewing V Strokestown on Sat 11 June and now Pierce Purcell V Ballina or Tubbercurry.

Sunday’s win over Ballaghaderreen came from having three matches away, where Carrick won two – Michael Keville & Pat Gannon won 2/1 and Eamonn McGirl & Chris Lowe on 19th while at home Keith Duignan & Fiachra Neary won 3/2 and Liam Bruen & Shane Kelly won 4/3, Tom Daly & Padraig MacShera lost 3/2.

The Mixed 4Some team lost 4-1 to County Sligo on Wednesday evening last 25th May, losing two matches in Rosses Point and two at home, one on 17 and one on 19th the only win came from David McDermott & Ann Campbell who won on 19th Sean Bohan & Carmel Stritch and Tommy Mulvey & Esther Feely both lost at home. Leo Mulvey & Siobhan Talbot and Des Beirne & Phil McWeeney lost in Co Sligo.

Commiserations to our Ladies Challenge Cup team who were unsuccessful against Athlone. Our best wishes to Athlone as they continue to the next round.

Next up is the Ladies Minor Cup team captained by Gabrielle Madsen who play Mountbellew next week. Best of luck to Gabrielle and the team!
