Local TD Denis Naughten has sought urgent clarification from Irish Water on the impact of the sewer upgrade on localised flooding in Roscommon Town.

Earlier today Irish Water announced an investment of €2.9m in the wastewater infrastructure in Roscommon Town, which will see surface water that currently goes into the sewer network, diverted into local drains and streams.

“While the level of water to be diverted may have little impact on the overall scale of flooding, it could have very serious implications for individual homes in the town if water that was previously diverted via the town sewer is now forced into streams that are blocked and not being maintained,” explained Denis Naughten.

“We all recall on 6th December last properties flooding due to the lack on maintenance of drains in the vicinity of Roscommon Town and forcing more water, particularly at times of very heavy rainfall, into such streams could lead to even greater flooding.

“While any investment in our wastewater network is welcome, there must be a full assessment of its impact on potential flooding and appropriate action taken to clean up and maintain these streams,” concluded Denis Naughten.
